Last night, I was watching TV with the family. We had to continuously pause the movie because of earthquakes. One of them shook our building so much that I jumped out of the sofa and made safety cautions around the house.
According to volcanologists, the Reykjanes peninsula has likely entered a 100 to 200-year volcanic period. The volcanic area is near Reykjavik and even closer to Keflavik International Airport.
This period started last year with earthquakes and eruptions in Fagradalsfjall in Geldingardalir. That eruption turned out friendly to the neighborhood and became an attraction for curious travelers — such an amazing scene.
There is no guarantee the next eruption will be as friendly. Based on the current earthquake pattern, scientists predict another eruption in the fall.
We hope for the best here in Iceland.
Update: 3rd of August 2022 – An eruption started (one day after this post was written). You can follow the progress on the RUV website.
