When I stepped on the scale three months ago, it showed 90kg, the heaviest I'd ever been. It was a big warning sign as my ideal weight is 82kg.
I decided to lose fat and do it fast. I started to experiment with myself.
I had been focused on training before, which included a mix of strength and cardio exercises three times a week.
However, despite my efforts, the extra weight had still crept up on me. I realized that training alone was insufficient. I needed to change my diet.
I started by setting these boundaries for myself:
- Eat max 3 times a day.
- Eat max 90% of becoming full.
- No high-sugar foods and drinks (eat fruits when lacking energy)
I weighed myself every day and usually landed somewhere between 88-90kg depending on what I had eaten the days before. I wasn’t getting where I wanted yet.
The next step was skipping parts from my diet:
- No bread.
- No dairy products.
- No beer.
- No wine.
- No carbs.
This helped, but it didn't feel sustainable to cut those out altogether since I enjoy having variety in my daily diet; it’s part of enjoying life.
However, eating fewer carbs is positive. Less pizza, pasta, bread, and beer. There are too many carbs in people’s “normal” diet today.
Instead, I started seeking more proteins from meat, fish, eggs, beans, and certain veggies. Food with a bit of fat was still allowed and I drank water all the time.
Without losing loads of weight, these diet changes gave me more energy throughout the day. I had fever cravings leading to quick fixes from carb-rich food. I felt better. But it wouldn’t have a major effect on my weight loss.
I was still around 89kg and running out of ideas. What to do next...
What I started noticing with better nutrition; I wasn’t as hungry anymore.
I could skip breakfast sometimes and still feel fine. I was even surprised that I had plenty of energy during training.
Breakfast has been a religious part of my whole life. I decided to skip it.
Life without breakfast was a game-changer. To eat two meals per day instead of three, and no snacks in between. I finally lost weight.
I’m now between 85-86kg and trending downwards. Less inputs -> Less outputs. Who would have thought?
And I feel good, maybe even better than before. I'm also happy to keep lunch and dinner as these are the most social and fun meals during the day.
Do I never crave more food? Occasionally, but not often. My will to lose weight still overpowers the cravings. I think it’s more a habit than me needing more food. I was probably overeating before — and eating too many carbs.
The experiment goes on and I’ll report more progress later.
