I've been through recessions before and feel better equipped to handle it this time around.

The type of recession many of us face now is financial uncertainty and having our ability to spend go down significantly. It might be because of inflation, higher electricity bills, increased cost of living, growing interest rates on loan payments, or decreased income.

It can be hard to swallow seeing your quality of life deteriorate after getting used to a comfy lifestyle. Maybe you even had hopes that you were "gonna make it" before your investment portfolio came crashing down.

I spent years after the financial crash in 2008 trying to recover as it shook my worldview. I was working as a team lead at one of the largest bank in Iceland (Landsbankinn), which went bankrupt during the bust, and the Icelandic government took it over.

But there are summers and winters, and one day the sun will shine again.

The question is what you'll do with your time now and how you use the situation to improve as a person. A recession is an opportunity to focus inwards, work on your skills, and become mentally and physically stronger.

You can meditate, train your body, become closer to family & friends, read books, explore nature, etc. Those things tend to be affordable and help improve you as a person.

I'm a big believer in consistency and setting yourself a weekly schedule of activities can be a good place to start.

Just keep on going, and don't forget that life is now. Even though things don't work as you hoped, they eventually might. We're still alive and playing the game. That's already a reason to be thankful.
